Also known as a pilgrim bottle, a costrel is a generic term for a tabbed bottle for carrying water, wine, or oil. The term comes from an old French word meaning “by the side.” Surviving examples suggest it was attached to a waistbelt with a short loop strung through the holes and worn on the side of one’s hip (as opposed to being worn on a shoulder strap). These leather bottles are well documented from the 14th century through the 18th century. Handmade by our local leather craftsman. Lined with brewer’s pitch. Comes with care instructions. 8" tall and holds about a pint.
